When it comes to the news media, President Donald Trump’s relationship status is set to “it’s complicated.” He both relishes and loathes the coverage that comes from an institution he has disparaged as “the enemy of the people” – a phrase with roots in the bloodiest days of the French Revolution and later echoed by murderous Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

In his second term, he has escalated his war on the press. In his latest salvo, the White House removed The Wall Street Journal from the Air Force One “pool” set to cover his four-day visit to parts of Scotland where his family owns two golf courses and is opening another.
